A senior figure in Iran has strongly criticized Western countries and cautioned neighboring nations in the region against relying on support from the United States amid ongoing discussions about a potential agreement between Iran and the U.S. Ali Akbar Velayati, who serves as an advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, highlighted the crucial role Iran plays in ensuring stability in the Gulf region, particularly through its management of the Strait of Hormuz. He accused Western powers of fostering instability in this strategically significant area.
Velayati’s remarks came shortly after American officials engaged in talks with Gulf allies, underscoring the necessity of maintaining free access to shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has issued warnings that any efforts to obstruct or limit maritime movement in this vital passage could lead to a serious confrontation. The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global energy supplies, with a significant amount of the world’s oil and gas shipments transiting through it.
Iran has asserted its critical role in managing the shipping activities through the strait, emphasizing its rights as a coastal nation. The country has resisted calls for unrestricted passage, arguing that its interests and position should be considered. Recently, tensions have heightened following reports of incidents involving foreign vessels near the crucial waterway.
Despite these political tensions, the oil markets have reacted with a decline in prices. This response is largely due to market expectations that any potential supply disruptions in the region could be contained, minimizing their impact on global energy distribution.
