Amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, China has cautioned the United States to manage its dealings with Taiwan with care following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to communicate with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. Such interactions are particularly delicate for Beijing, as it perceives Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory and disapproves of any foreign government engaging officially with the island’s authorities.
Beijing regards Taiwan as a secessionist province that should be reunified with China, potentially through military means if necessary. The Chinese government consistently opposes international recognition of Taiwan as an independent entity and frequently condemns high-level diplomatic engagements with its leaders. Chinese officials have expressed concern that interactions like those proposed by Trump signal support for Taiwan’s independence and intrude into China’s domestic matters.
Recent years have seen a spike in tensions surrounding Taiwan. In 2022, China conducted extensive military exercises near Taiwan in response to a visit from a senior U.S. official, underscoring Beijing’s disapproval of foreign involvement. Additionally, China has been vocal against American arms sales to Taiwan and political endorsements that bolster Taiwan’s standing on the global stage.
Taiwan maintains its stance as a self-ruling democracy known as the Republic of China, opposing Beijing’s claims to sovereignty. The Taiwanese government asserts the right of its citizens to elect their leaders and establish international relationships independently of China’s influence. Meanwhile, the United States adheres to the “One China” policy, officially recognizing Beijing while sustaining unofficial relations with Taipei and providing Taiwan with defensive military equipment under the Taiwan Relations Act.
In a previous instance in 2016, Trump engaged directly with former Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, an unusual move that drew criticism from China. Any further direct communication between Trump and Lai could exacerbate the already fragile U.S.-China relations and possibly lead to increased Chinese military maneuvers in the vicinity of Taiwan.
