Google’s Gemini: The $1B ‘Planner’ for Apple’s New Siri

Must Read

Google’s 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini AI is set to become the “planner” for Apple’s new Siri, thanks to a $1 billion-a-year deal. This “interim solution” is a major win for Google and a reluctant admission of its AI lag by Apple.
This “behind-the-scenes” integration is part of Apple’s “Glenwood” project to fix Siri. Google’s “ultrapowerful” AI was chosen after it won a “bake-off” against OpenAI and Anthropic, and it will now handle all “summariser” and “planner” functions for the new “Linwood” assistant.
The new Siri will be a hybrid, using Apple’s 150-billion parameter models for simple tasks and Google’s AI for heavy lifting. This is a monumental upgrade for the assistant.
The project is overseen by executives Craig Federighi and Mike Rockwell, who are tasked with delivering a competitive assistant, even with a rival’s tech.
Privacy is non-negotiable. The Gemini model will be hosted on Apple’s “walled-off” Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring Google gets its $1B fee but no access to Apple user data.
