US-Canada trade talks are dead, with president Donald Trump accusing Canada of “egregious behavior” over a tv ad.
The ad, sponsored by Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs. Trump blasted the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent.”
He claimed the ad was an attempt to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs on Canadian goods.
The ad has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the former president’s full message.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, escalates the trade war and jeopardizes a vital economic partnership.
