The chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt has been evident since their collaboration on Jungle Cruise, and it seems Johnson wanted to carry that energy over to one of Blunt’s most iconic franchises. Johnson recently disclosed to Entertainment Weekly that he made a genuine attempt to join the cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2. While working together on the MMA drama The Smashing Machine, Johnson seized the opportunity to pitch a role for himself in Blunt’s upcoming fashion dramedy.
Johnson’s vision for his character was surprisingly specific. He didn’t want to play a bodyguard or a tough guy; he wanted to portray a character who was “cool” and possessed genuine fashion knowledge. It was a bold move for the actor, who is 53, to suggest inserting himself into a narrative dominated by the fierce dynamic of Miranda Priestly’s runway empire. Blunt confirmed the story, noting that he indeed “tried” to land a small role in the production which is being helmed by original director David Frankel.
The conversation took a hilarious turn when the logistics of the role came up. Blunt pointed out that the character in question would need to walk in heels. Without missing a beat, Johnson committed to the bit, claiming he was ready to wear “size 15 heels” if that’s what the script demanded. Blunt added to the humor by quipping that Johnson was surprisingly attractive in such footwear, giving fans a mental image that is equal parts amusing and intriguing.
Unfortunately for those hoping for this crossover, the casting did not pan out. The Devil Wears Prada 2 will proceed with its legacy cast—Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Blunt—without an appearance from The Rock. The film, based on the world created by novelist Lauren Weisberger, is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, marking two decades since the original premiered at the LA Film Festival.
Despite the rejection, there is no bad blood between the stars. Johnson revealed that he lived vicariously through Blunt during the filming process. She would send him video updates from her car in New York City, showing him the chaotic and enthusiastic crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the production. Johnson marveled at the “pop star level sighting,” proving that even without a role, he remains a massive fan of the franchise’s enduring impact.
