Elon Musk’s new online encyclopedia, Grokipedia, is fundamentally a political project, born from a suggestion by the Trump administration’s former “AI and cryptocurrency czar,” David Sacks.
This political origin is reflected in the encyclopedia’s content, which Musk confirms is designed to align with his right-wing views. Grokipedia is Musk’s latest weapon in his war against the “mainstream media” and Wikipedia, which he criticizes for not reflecting his ideology.
Unlike Wikipedia’s volunteer-driven model, Grokipedia is entirely AI-generated. All content is written and “fact-checked” by Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot. This has led to entries that read like conservative talking points.
The most prominent example is the article on the January 6 insurrection. It cites the disproven lie of “widespread claims of voting irregularities” and reframes the violent attack as a “legitimate expression of grievances.”
This ideological focus is already resulting in the spread of misinformation. Journalists have identified clear factual errors, including a false claim that pornography worsened the Aids epidemic. Musk’s launch follows his own temporary service in Trump’s second presidency and a poll naming him the most disliked public figure in the U.S.
