In a firm response to recent statements by US President Donald Trump, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have dismissed the notion that Greenland should be under American control. The comments were made following Trump’s remarks at the latest NATO summit, where he reiterated his controversial view on the status of Greenland.
President Stubb emphasized that any decisions regarding Greenland’s governance are strictly the responsibility of Denmark and Greenland itself. Echoing this sentiment, Foreign Minister Valtonen confirmed Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s sovereignty, underscoring the importance of respecting territorial integrity in international relations.
Valtonen further elaborated on the issue, suggesting that Arctic security concerns should be managed through established defense collaborations rather than through new territorial claims. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already in discussions regarding defense cooperation, highlighting ongoing efforts within NATO to bolster security measures in the Arctic region.
Greenland operates as a self-governing entity within the Kingdom of Denmark, a status that has become a focal point in recent discussions among European allies. Trump’s comments have reignited debates surrounding Arctic security, raising questions about sovereignty and stability in the region.
